Mumps is caused by a parvovirus infection that is spread by droplets of nasal secretions that are carried in the air. There has been an epidemic of mumps in the United Kingdom in the last three years. Young men are particularly severely affected with orchitis (inflammation of the testes). The epidemic has been fuelled by the declining numbers of children receiving mumps immunisation as part of the combined measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine.
